Yaya, and a few other folks encountered during our survey, provided local names in Wolof, Peul, Serer, and French, as well as uses for many of the plants. Specimens of the trees and shrubs were then taken to Dr Mathieu Guèye and his collegues at the Laboratoire Botanique at the Institut Fondamentale d'Afrique Noire (IFAN) in Dakar, where scientific names were attached to each of them. Photographs and information on the different species of this collection, as well as a few other useful plants, can be viewed in the Gorée flora image gallery.

Yaya Diallo (superman) on the island of Ngor, north of Dakar
Ethnobotany Sun, 18 Sep 2005 21:43:10 -0500
